BOTOX® Cosmetic and Soft Tissue Fillers

When you smile, laugh, frown, or look puzzled, you contract the muscles of your face. Over time, these contractions produce permanent furrows and deep wrinkles in the skin, especially around the eyes and mouth, between the eyebrows, and on the forehead. These lines can make you look older, sad, angry or tired. Dermal fillers can not only prevent you from deepening these lines during natural facial movements, they can also erase these marks of aging, leaving you looking younger and refreshed.

Dermal fillers are FDA-approved and safe for use by most patients.  Many of the fillers are made from substances found naturally in the body, or synthetically made to mimic natural substances or stimulate collagen production.  These fillers are injected directly into the skin of the targeted area to restore volume and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

BOTOX® Cosmetic

BOTOX injections are the most commonly performed cosmetic procedure used to reduce or eliminate the appearance of facial wrinkles through minimally invasive injections.  Quick, safe and effective, BOTOX® reduces or eliminates facial lines and wrinkles for up to six months with no downtime and little to no discomfort. Through a series of tiny injections, BOTOX® gives you a rejuvenated look by smoothing crow's feet around the eyes, frown lines between the eyebrows, horizontal lines across the forehead and worry lines around the mouth. These injections are made from botulinum toxin A, a therapeutic muscle-relaxing agent approved by the FDA for several different uses.  When injected into the skin, it can block the nerve impulses to muscles that are responsible for the repetitive actions that cause fine lines and wrinkles, smoothing them away for a younger and more refreshed appearance.

In addition to smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles, BOTOX® may be useful for treating migraine headaches, excessive sweating, chronic back and jaw pain, and muscle spasms

After treatment, the appearance of your wrinkles begins to improve within 24 hours, with full results developing gradually over the next 10-14  days.  Most patients achieve their desired results after just one injection, although additional treatment sessions may be required in the future.  The results of Botox injections typically last up to four months, with some patients reporting results lasting up to a full year.

JUVÉDERM® Injectable Gel

Juvederm Injectable Gel is a safe, effective gel that restores volume to the skin and smoothes away moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds.  Juvederm is the first FDA-approved dermal filler proven safe and effective for persons of color.  The Juvederm gel is made of hyaluronic acid with a smooth consistency, allowing for easy injections and instant, natural-looking results.  There is no pre-testing needed for this procedure.

Topical or injectable anesthesia may be used during this procedure to numb the treatment area and minimize any potential discomfort.  The results of this procedure are available right away and can usually last for up to a year, the longest results available from any hyaluronic acid product.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between BOTOX and dermal fillers like Juvederm?

BOTOX prevents the muscles that cause skin wrinkling from contracting, leaving the overlying skin smoother. We call these types of wrinkles “dynamic wrinkles”. Juvederm is used to fill in wrinkles and creases in the skin caused by aging, making them appear less noticeable. BOTOX and Juvederm are often used together in different parts of the face to obtain the most pleasing results.

How long will the results last?

Both BOTOX and Juvederm provide temporary results that may last from a few months up to one year. Many variables determine how long the results will last. These may include skin type, exposure to the sun or UV rays from tanning beds, how quickly your body absorbs the materials, strength of the facial muscles and others.

What are the risks associated with these procedures?

As with all medical procedures there is always the risk of complications. Dr. Kurek will discuss these risks during your consultation appointment. You will also be given ample opportunity to ask questions.

How much downtime should I expect from these procedures?

Most clients are able to resume normal activities immediately after treatment with BOTOX. Swelling and redness from the injections usually resolve very quickly. Recovery from Juvederm injections may take more time. Redness and swelling at the injection sites may take several days to resolve and bruising can also sometimes occur. It is best not to schedule these procedures just before an important event or engagement in order to avoid these complications.

Are these procedures painful?

BOTOX is injected in very small amounts through a small diameter needle and are nearly painless. Juvederm injection can be more uncomfortable. Dr. Kurek routinely uses local anesthetics to numb the skin completely so that injections are completely painless. Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) may also be used. After the procedures most clients require no pain medication at all or they may use Tylenol.

How is BOTOX used to help people who have headaches?

Headaches may be caused by excessive contraction of the jaw muscles, often associated with tooth
clenching and grinding. BOTOX can be used to decrease the force of these muscle contractions so that the headaches may lessen or resolve completely.

How much do these treatments cost?

Costs are based upon the price of the materials used as well as the doctor’s time, skill and experience. Dr. Kurek will provide an estimate of the costs based upon his examination and consultation with you. Sometimes clients request additional amounts of material be used for further enhancement and additional costs are then incurred.
